Hello Forum,
I see that 72% answered "yes" to the question so far.
The main difficulty, of course, is finding the evidence. My favorite approach would be to search for active artifacts, that is, robotic spacecraft that other civilizations have launched into the galaxy to gather knowledge. If we can tap in on their communications, or guess at where such spacecraft might be in our vicinity and look for them there, we may answer the big question sooner, rather than later.
Timothy Ferris, a popular science author, uses the term "interstellar internet" to describe what we might have to find and tap into. I believe there are good strategies we can follow in a search, given good equipment of modest size and cost.

We have one example of intelligent life on any known planet, and that is us.
It might take humans less than 200 years to go from the first electrical devices, radios, and calculating machines to what some scientists are calling "the Technological Singularity", where computers start improving themselves. Some scientists are saying this could happen within 40 years.
Here are links to writings on the Technological Singularity:
What is the Singularity?, by Vernor Vinge
Technological Singularity (wikipedia)
When a carbon-based civilization becomes technological, they introduce "metal-based" and "silicon-based" "lifeforms". The silicon-based "lifeforms" are computers, and eventually become so fast and smart as to rival the brains of their carbon-based creators. Science fiction? We will see, perhaps in our lifetimes.
If it happens that carbon-based technological life is made shorter, the chance of communicating with other carbon-based lifeform dominated civilizations is very low. We then have to contact their silicon-based descendants, instead.
